It says a lot for EmbraceΓÇÖs comeback album that the least interesting track here is Gravity, the song gifted them by Chris Martin. Which isnΓÇÖt to say itΓÇÖs a dud: on the contrary, its trademark sonorous piano motif and simple, childΓÇÖs-play melody fit Danny McNamaraΓÇÖs band like a glove. But its presence points up an intriguing twist of transience: when Embrace first emerged, they rode the coat-tails of Britpop in its dying days, and were thus first lauded as fresh(ish) and then damned as old hat. Yet, since that early commercial peak, the more mournful, introspective aspects of their music have found favour, making Gravity, never mind its provenance, a play list certainty today. Equally likely hits on a swaggering, confident return are Ashes, Someday and Spell It out. Could EmbraceΓÇÖs time have finally come?
